Ingredients You Need

Are you ready to cook a grilled tomahawk steak? Go and get the following mentioned ingredients:

Tomahawk steak:

This is a thick-cut ribeye steak with the bone attached, typically weighing around 2 to 3 pounds.

Salt:

I suggest using kosher salt or sea salt.

Black pepper:

For adding flavor to your steak, use fresh ground black pepper.

Olive oil:

Extra virgin olive oil for marinating and basting the steak.

Optional Ingredients for Marinade or Seasoning:

Garlic cloves:

Crushed or minced garlic can be used to sweeten the steak’s taste.

Fresh Herbs

Rosemary, thyme, or a combination of both can be used to impart aromatic flavors. Chop the herbs or use whole sprigs.

Butter:

Adding butter on top of the steak while grilling can add richness and flavor.

Seasonings or rubs:

If you prefer some other flavor, you can use steak rubs or seasonings of your choice. Some popular options include paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried herbs.

You can always customize the flavors by adding additional spices or ingredients according to your preference.

How to Grill Tomahawk Steak?

Prepare the steak:

Start by removing the tomahawk steak from the refrigerator. Leave it for 30 minutes to come to room temperature.

Preheat the grill:

Set your grill to a high heat, between 450 and 500 °F (230 and 260 °C). To avoid sticking, make sure the grates are clean and lightly oiled.

Season the steak:

Add an adequate amount of kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your taste. You can also choose to add additional dry rubs or seasonings based on your preferences.

Sear the steak:

  • Place the tomahawk steak directly onto the hot grill grates.
  • Sear it on one side for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Flip it over and sear the other side for an additional 2-3 minutes. This initial high-heat sear will help develop a flavorful crust.

Move to indirect heat:

After searing, move the tomahawk steak to the grill’s side that receives indirect heat or lower the heat directly. This will allow slower and more controlled cooking to achieve the required doneness without burning the exterior.

Cook to desired doneness:

The tomahawk steak should be grilled for a while, periodically being turned, until it reaches a desired level of doneness.

Rest the steak:

When the tomahawk steak is cooked to your required level of doneness, remove it from the grill. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This allows the liquids to be redistributed throughout the meat, making the steak more soft and tasty.

Slice and serve:

Now, it is time to cut the tomahawk steak. Hold the bone handle and cut thick slices against the grain with a sharp knife. This will allow each piece to include a portion of the bone, giving it an impressive look.

Now it is ready to serve. Enjoy it with your loved ones!
